Take a look around the room you are sitting in. I can bet there is some sort of advertisement within 10 feet from you. On the computer screen, that magazine next to you, the television screen or even outside your window. Advertising is more than those commercials you see when the Disney channel takes a break. Advertisements are everywhere! It is important to recognize advertisements as just that-ADVERTISING. Wikipedia defines advertising as " a form of communication used to encourage or persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to continue or take some new action" (Wikipedia). Defining the word advertising, it is easy to see that advertising is used to entice the consumer to buy a product or take an action. Allen Kanner, who is also an associate faculty member at a clinical psychology training program called the Wright Institute stated in an article about advertising to children, "Advertising is a massive, multi-million dollar project that's having an enormous impact on child development," (Clay).
There are many times that marketers present messages or information to confuse children. _ A study that Robert Levine includes in his book, The Power of Persuasion demonstrates how children could not distinguish between a commercial or a cartoon that had the same character present. Children do not fully understand the messages in these advertisements. Furthermore, Levine argues that, "These findings underscore the potency and danger of the increasingly common practice of having familiar entertainment character double up as product pitchmen in children's advertisements" (52). On the other hand Advertisers argue the importance of knowing your customers and what they like. According to Acuff and Reiher "The secret is to know your customers. Segment your target as tightly as possible. Determine exactly who your customers are, both demographically and psychographically" (216). Children are the key target to many products through out society.
